- What is Reiki?
"Rei" means Life Force and "ki" means energy. Reiki is the Life Force Energy that we are formed from, are and are surrounded by - the healing energy of the Universe. Reiki is a hands-on healing modality that connects us with the healing energy that surrounds us. Life Force Energy animates all living beings. When your life force is low or restricted in its flow, you will be more vulnerable to illness. Reiki is the energy that flows through the hands of the Reiki practitioner. Reiki heals by flowing through a person's energy pathways (chakras), releasing energy blockages, and raising a person's vibrational energy. Reiki is both powerful and gentle.
During a Reiki session, the recipient lies, fully dressed, on a massage table. The practitioner gently places her hands on or near areas of the body needing attention as she channels the healing energy. People may experience warmth or vibratory energy emanating from the practitioner's hands. A Reiki session is very calming and nurturing, and often people feel a deep sense of relaxation, similar to a meditative state.

- Do I have to take a class to learn Reiki?
You must be attuned to the Reiki energy in order to use Reiki. There are many other forms of healing, but to use Reiki, one must be attuned specifically to the Reiki energy.

- Does one have to be "gifted" to learn Reiki?
Human beings are social beings. When we reach out to touch someone we naturally give healing energy. We think of this as kindness or compassion and it is. It is also a non-verbal energy that is being transmitted. When you learn how to channel Reiki you open to allowing more of that natural life force energy to pass through you to the other.

At a very simple level we can understand that stress exacerbates every single medical condition. Science has proven that Reiki invokes the relaxation response or the parasympathetic nervous system. Therefore, Reiki helps us to relax, let go, and renew ourselves, thus helping to stablize our illnesses or to help us heal.
